System6 – The Brightside, Fortitude Valley

SpectraFX brought a high-energy combination of professional event lighting, intelligent fixtures and high-powered RGB lasers to System6 at The Brightside in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, creating an immersive visual experience designed to complement the music and keep the energy moving throughout the night.

Located in the heart of Brisbane's entertainment precinct, The Brightside has established itself as a major live music and events venue, hosting hundreds of performances and events across its spaces.

For System6, SpectraFX was responsible for delivering both the laser light show and lighting operator services, combining carefully programmed lighting with synchronised laser effects to transform the venue into a dynamic visual environment.

Creating the Visual Experience

The production was designed around a combination of movement, colour, intensity and atmosphere.

SpectraFX utilised a comprehensive lighting package incorporating moving-head fixtures, LED PARs, blinders, strobes and haze. This provided the flexibility to create everything from sharp, high-energy looks through to atmospheric moments that allowed the lasers to dominate the room.

The addition of an Antari F6 hazer was particularly important to the laser production, allowing the beams to become visible throughout the venue and creating the layered aerial effects associated with a professional laser show.

The lighting and laser systems were operated as a complete visual package, allowing the lighting operator to respond dynamically to the music while maintaining a cohesive overall production.

Lighting Package

The lighting system supplied for System6 included:

4 × ACME CM-300ZRII moving-head fixtures

12 × Event Lighting PAR18X4QL-IP LED PAR fixtures

4 × ACME EyeFlash blinders

4 × ACME ST1000 strobes

1 × Antari F6 hazer

1 × ChamSys PC Wing

This combination provided a broad range of lighting effects, from fast-moving beam and colour effects through to audience blinders, high-impact strobe effects and ambient stage lighting.

High-Powered RGB Laser Show

The laser component of the production featured:

4 × 8.5W RGB full-colour lasers

With a combined optical power of 34W, the four-laser system provided substantial coverage and visual impact throughout the venue.

The lasers were positioned to create multiple aerial effects and sweeping beams, adding another dimension to the lighting production. Rather than simply using the lasers as an additional lighting effect, SpectraFX incorporated them as a key part of the show's visual identity.

The combination of high-powered RGB lasers, haze and intelligent lighting created a layered visual environment that responded to the energy of the System6 event.

Professional Laser Control & Programming

The laser system was controlled using a dedicated production setup consisting of:

Akai APC40 MIDI controller

2 × Pangolin FB4 control cards

Pangolin Beyond laser control software

Custom laser show programming by Mathew Kellet

The laser content was programmed specifically for the event by Mathew Kellet, allowing the show to be tailored to the music, venue and production requirements rather than relying solely on generic or pre-programmed effects.

Using Pangolin Beyond together with the FB4 hardware provided precise control over the four-laser system, while the Akai APC40 gave the operator hands-on control over key show parameters during the performance.

Lighting Operator Services

SpectraFX also provided the lighting operator services for the event.

Operating a show such as System6 requires more than simply programming fixtures. The operator needs to understand the music, anticipate changes and make real-time decisions that complement the performance.

The combination of ChamSys lighting control and live operation allowed the lighting system to be adapted throughout the event, creating dynamic transitions between lighting looks and laser sequences.

The result was a cohesive production where lighting, lasers, haze and visual effects worked together as one show.
